Darwin

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory and is the least populated of all the capital cities in Australia with over 120,000 residents. It is a resilient city that had to be almost entirely rebuilt twice in its history. The first time was in World War II after the air raids from Japan and again in 1974 after Cyclone Tracy.

This capital has a tropical wet and dry climate, which means there are separate wet and dry seasons. The average maximum temperature is similar throughout the year, averaging around the low 30°C and the average minimum temperature hovering above 20°C. The dry season is the city’s winter. The days are sunny and warm and very little rainfall. Frost has never been recorded. The wet season is in the summer and can consist of monsoon rains and sometimes even tropical cyclones. The days are hot and humid.

The 1st of July is Territory Day this is celebrated by a grand fireworks display.
The Darwin Festival is held annually and celebrates the arts and cultural community in Darwin like comedy, music, dance and theatre. The festival also hosts the Northern Territory Indigenous Music Awards.

The Speargrass Festival is held every year in July and celebrates the other lifestyle of Darwin residents. Activities include screening of locally produced films, basket weaving, Frisbee golf and communal organic cooking.
